Our connection to Canberra goes way back to the early 1970’s, when our senior technician Hugo first moved to the area from Santiago, Chile. He was a wide eyed ten-year-old who emigrated, along with his parents and two younger brothers, to escape the violent coup against the then Socialist government.
They initially resided with relatives in Holt, then moved to a rental property in Macquarie. Finally, his parents purchased a family home in Kambah where his mother still lives to this day. Though not born in Canberra, ‘Abuelita’ adores the nation’s capital and often declares that it is, “The best place in the world to live!”
Educated at the local High School, Hugo went on to study at Stirling College (aka Hedley Beare Centre for Teaching and Learning) and progressed to work in the maintenance industry, excelling in several services including irrigation, decorating and roof repair.
He did manage to take a break from work to charm the lovely Melissa, an Aussie country girl from Kilcoy. They married, and the happy couple went on to have three beautiful children, Chloe, Kayla and Jaxin.
Now, happily living in Wanniassa, his wealth of experience has been invaluable in his gutter and roof cleaning/maintenance role at Urban Gutters. As he carries out a thorough inspection of the roof area, his keen eye spots potential issues that may not have been noticed before, leading to expert advice or recommendations.
His diligent work ethic is only matched by his friendly manner, always happy to give our customers a simple but thorough run down of what needs to be done.
Hugo is always determined to provide a top-level service to his fellow Canberrans.
Along with his son and work colleague Jaxin, he’ll be sure to carry out a thorough clean of your gutters and down-pipes, solar panels and any necessary minor repairs.

“A South Londoner who now calls Australia home, Alex brings over 20 years of trade experience to Urban Gutters. Before relocating to Australia, he spent more than a decade running his own gas installation and repair company in London, working across residential and commercial properties. Gutter and roof maintenance was a natural extension of that plumbing background, since water systems, drainage, and building envelope integrity all sit in the same trade family.
Alex co-founded Urban Gutters in Sydney in 2022 alongside his wife Kayla, after years of working for trade companies that consistently fell short on customer service. The brief was simple: build a gutter cleaning business where client satisfaction was the priority, not an afterthought. Urban Gutters now services both Sydney and Canberra, holding a 5-star Google rating and growing rapidly.
When he’s not on the tools, Alex is usually talking football or charming customers with the dry South London humour that earned him the nickname “Guvna” within the team.”
